Whitechapel Mystery

☆☆ Autobiography of Jack the Ripper
by James Carnac

I'd say it's just so so. I don't believe that it's non-fiction as it's touted to be. In my opinion, an interesting take on the mysteries of Mr. Ripper's identity and still no one has been 100% sure of any certain individual that would be Jack the Ripper. ...As I read this book, I was hell bent on finding discrepancies to fact; ended up learning something that I didn't realize before. At one point in Carnac's memoirs, he mentioned the measurement of 3 feet. I always thought Britain used the metrication. But, doing research from that point in my reading, I found out that England did NOT use metric and used the imperial measurements up until the mid 1960s!  Also, I found it quite a convenient mention of the candlestick in his room for light while writing about his escapades in the Whitechapel District...why?  Well, you must read the book and how it ends to understand what I mean; certainly a convenient addition to the whole story.  Otherwise I don't think it would have been mentioned at all since several times he added "I won't go into all the detail" throughout.  The way the saga ends, makes it a great mystery ...a mystery novel in my opinion. In the long run, reading this may pique some interest in who this James Carnac REALLY is [no record of him OR his family found online], and the twists and turns while walking in the dark with him in anticipation of finding the 'perfect subject' for the night may get your adrenaline pumping. TWO stars out of FIVE rating.
